Its sleek, it's easy to use and it will not ever make it to mainstream America.

There are 6 reasons why we will never see Apple take more than a third of the market share. For the sake of this article, mainstream will be referred to as greater than 33% of all computers.

Reason #6: The corporate world won't adopt OSX. Look around your office, more than likely you're looking at a Windows based environment. While it's true that not all companies run Windows, it is safe to say that the majority do in some form. Why wont corporations switch? Its simple, companies invest millions of dollars to keep up a Windows based infrastructure. The only thing costlier than maintaining thousands of computers is to replace them all, all with OSX.

If we can't convert our companies to OSX then we stand little chance in convincing institutions of higher education to do the same. The idea is based on a waterfall principle that we need a major change on one front to affect the rest. The problem is that the world revolves around money and it costs money to replace current infrastructures with OSX. While corporations are not the only user of computers they have a massive trickle down effect. The average person can pick up and use a Windows computer without a problem no matter what version they use; it's a 'comfortable' operating system. The same can not be said about OSX, while it may be easy to use, not nearly as many people have used OSX as compared to Windows. If our corporations use Windows our schools will teach upon it, how many people have taken a Windows based course before?

Reason #5: Software. Let's take a simple look at the available software titles out there for each platform. Regardless of the topic Windows based programs dwarf the OSX competition with ease. If your looking for a program to do a certain task you will, without a doubt, have more options on Windows PC. If you're a hardcore gamer there is no option but to have a copy of Windows at your disposal if you care to keep up on the most current titles.

If you're into business software the options for OSX are dismal at best. While it's unfortunate that Microsoft commands so much power, the latest versions of Microsoft Office always come out on Windows before OSX. While not a deal breaker for the home user it can be for reason #5.

Reason #4: Apples Image. Apple has built the image that it is modern and un-Microsoft. While this is working out great for Apple in the short term it also limits its user base. Take a look at any OSX vs Vista advertisement. It's always the cool kid making fun of the suit Vista. While this is great for the college student looking to get a computer it doesn't work so well with mom and dad who very well may see themselves as a 'suit' in that picture. Look around your dinner table and more than likely your father or mother is a suit at work. Professionalism is key to many adults and Apple has steered itself away from be the professional option. Good for poor college kids not so good for the hard working suit.

Reason #3: OSX is a closed platform. Want to build a custom computer with OSX; don't even try (legally). Apple has limited the configurations that OSX can be implemented on. This works well for Apple's business model but anyone who wants to construct a custom built computer is not able to use OSX (legally). If you're trying to build the ultimate computer with bleeding edge technology for your need, OSX is not an option. Lock the platform and you lock out consumers.

Reason #2: The Apple Tax. To get a computer running OSX you must buy a computer from Apple. Apple computers have a higher cost than a traditional PC from Dell or HP. Also it has to be mentioned that there is no low-cost option. The cheapest option is the Mac-mini which starts at $599.99. For someone looking to buy a budget PC, Apple is not an option.

Reason #1: Steve Jobs. To become a major competitor you must remain strong for the foreseeable future. Many people don't like to buy into a product that doesn't have a long life ahead of it. Regardless of how well OSX runs, how cool it looks, it can all be attributed back to Steve Jobs; he is the master of sales and marketing. Much of Apple's recent success can be attributed to his skills. Steve Jobs will not live nor want to work forever. When Steve passes the buck to the next person in line will his horde of followers accept this?

source: neowin.net

New MacBooks Can Do More than Apple Says

On its website, Apple touts the just-introduced aluminum Macbook as being able to go up to 4 gigs of memory. However, history has shown that Apple sometimes stays on the safe side (if you will), when it comes to listing technical stuff. This time it's no different.

When talking about “Processor and memory,” Apple says its 13-inch MacBook has a 2.0GHz or 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor (depending on what you want), with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed, and 1066MHz frontside bus. As for the supported memory, Apple says the new MacBook ships with “2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs)” modules of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, while the notebook itself boasts two SO-DIMM slots. According to the company, the maximum amount of RAM supported is 4GB. “Not true,” sources reveal.

Being the 32-bit chipset that it is, it would be easy to assume that Nvidia's 9400M is limited to 4 gigabytes of RAM. According to 9to5mac, this is not the case. Why? “The desktop equivalent 9300 32-bit chipset maxes out at 8Gb of RAM. They would be unlikely to limit the max RAM on a higher model chipset,” the source notes. They went forth with calling up Nvidia on this, and what do you know – it's true. Apple's 13-incher does 8 gigs, or at least so it should, according to an Nvidia insider. An email from Nvidia's Ken (Ken who?), goes a bit like this:

“Yes! 8Gb MacBooks should be no problem ... an 8GB system can be built using two such SODIMMs after the memory is qualified with GF 9400M. I’m curious why you were thinking of loading up on memory? In terms of gaming perf, going from 4GB to 8GB of system memory would have little to no effect.”

Why anyone would want to beef up on the MacBook's memory is of little importance right now. What matters is that it's physically, and technically, possible to have a 13-inch aluminum MacBook packing 8 gigs of functional random access memory.

Adding this to the “hidden” compatibility with the iPhone headset, we now have two super-powers that Apple hasn't mentioned in regards to its best selling Mac. What else are we going to find in those things... living parts?

Linux and Mac OS X Eat Away at Windows, Even with XP SP3 and Vista SP1

Even with the latest service pack releases for the two supported Windows clients, rival operating systems Linux and Mac OS X are still eating away at the install base of Microsoft's proprietary operating system.

Concomitantly with the retirement of Bill Gates from his day to day role with the Redmond company, Windows has passes the 1 billion milestone in terms of its global audience. And while Microsoft is indeed gunning for the next five billion users, the fact of the matter is that the share of its client is going down month after month for the benefit of Mac OS X and Linux.

Statistics published by Net Applications reveal that Windows was down to 90.89% at the end of the past month from 91.13% in May 2008. This, while Mac OS X is close to reaching no less than 8% of the operating system market, having jumped to 7.94% in June, up from 7.83% in May. In the past couple of months, Linux accounted for an impressive growth going up from 0.68% all the way to 0.80%. Net Applications continue to place Linux under the 1% market share mark, but the open source operating system is approaching the milestone at a rate that translates into a steady growth tendency.

Responsible for the erosion of Windows' market share is not so much XP, even though it has been dropping like a rock ever since Vista hit, but older Windows operating systems on which Microsoft has already pulled the plug in terms of support. Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98 still hold together over 3% of the operating system market, but are seeing their users switch to alternative solutions from month to month.

Service Pack 3 for XP did nothing to impact the descendant trajectory of the operating system which dropped from 72.12% to 71.20% in the past two months. At the same time, even with Service Pack 1, Vista's growth is still limited under 1% per month and has just hit a share of 16.14% at the end of June, representing approximately 160 million licenses of the operating system sold worldwide.

iPhone 3G: no-contract iPhone on tap

Looks like we'll have to get up bright and early to buy the new iPhone. Also, AT&T says a "no-commitment IPhone is "coming soon."

First things first: The new iPhone 3G will go on sale at 8 a.m. next Friday at AT&T retail stores and Apple Stores. So if you're planning on lining up, you'd better be ready well before sunrise.

Also, AT&T has finally clarified pricing for current AT&T subscribers who want the iPhone 3G.

In a nutshell, if you're "upgrade eligible" (log into your AT&T account to see if you are), you'll be able to buy the new iPhone for the discounted price of $199 for the 8GB version or $299 for the 16GB model. (AT&T is somewhat vague about the eligibility criteria, although your credit history and the time remaining on your contract are factors.) You'll also have to pay an $18 "upgrade fee."

If you're not eligible for the discount, you'll have to fork over extra for an "early upgrade"-$399 for the 8GB iPhone 3G or $499 for the 16GB model. Ouch.

AT&T also says that a "no-commitment" (read: no contract) iPhone 3G will be available soon, at $599 for the 8GB version and or $699 for the 16GB handset. Pricey, but hey-no two-year contract.

Unfortunately, AT&T won't offer the new iPhone on a prepaid basis, at least not at launch.

Some other items: You will have to get your new iPhone activated at the store, and that means a credit check. So bring a photo ID and your Social Security number (especially if you're not yet an AT&T customer). If you want to cut down on the wait, you can go to an AT&T store now and take care of the credit check early.

There have been some rumors that current iPhone users could simply register the IMEI number of their new iPhone with AT&T clerks-meaning they could finish activating their phones at home. It's a nice idea, but so far, there's no indication from AT&T that such a plan exists.

As for the newly detailed rate plans, there aren't any surprises. Each plan comes bundled with unlimited data; $70 a month gets you 450 minutes and 5,000 night/weekend minutes, while a 900-minute plan with unlimited nights/weekends goes for $90. A 1,350-minute plan will cost $110 per month. Family plans are available, and business data plans will cost $45 a month (versus $30 per month for standard data in the bundled plans). Text messages are extra, too. Individuals pay $5 for 200 texts per month, $15 for 1,500 a month, or $20 for unlimited texting. For family plans, you'll pay $30 a month for unlimited messaging.

MAC OSX-LEOPARD105.DMG DIrect links again !!

Update: (18-7-2008)

1. Now be patient :-)

Now depending on what DVD you used, you will need to download the
right update from apple.com. I downloaded the 10.4.8 Intel update since I used
10.4.7 retail DVD.

Open MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.pkg with Pacifist and install to Other disk...

N.B.: Before installing the update, you may need to free some space on the pendrive.
Just delete the asiatic font files in /System/Library/Fonts (= 100 MB bonus).

Add missing files

Since we installed with Pacifist, some of the files are missing. We need to copy them.
Get them from a full 10.4.8 working install. Those files are:

/System/Library/CoreServices/SetupAssistant
/Applications/Safari.app
/Applications/Address Book.app
/Library/Receipts/BaseSystem.pkg
/Library/Receipts/Essentials.pkg

Copy OSx86 specific files

Among the possible factors: Apple's "I'm a Mac" ads.

Microsoft lands at No. 59 in the rankings for 2007, down from No. 11 in 2004, according to the survey from CoreBrand released Wednesday. "The effect of Apple's 'Hi, I'm a Mac' advertising campaign may have taken its toll on Microsoft," CoreBrand CEO James Gregory said in a statement.

In fairness to the folks in Redmond, they have fared far better in other recent brand studies. They were No. 1 on a list of Britain's top "superbrands" last year, and No.2 in an August BusinessWeek ranking of top global brands (trailing only Coca-Cola).

Install Leopard Patched DVD WIthout Tiger Installation

THIS GUIDE IS FOR A BLANK DRIVE WITH NO INSTALLATION OF TIGER IN IT!!!

This simple guide will show you how to install leopard on your PC without having Tiger on your system. The DVD will now load in verbose mode. Watch for any panics! It should load without a problem (of course, if you already installed, its all good!)

Once the setup is loaded, select your language. When the welcome screens shows up, select UTILITIES-TERMINAL. The terminal will now open. We will now browse to our Thumb Drive;

In the command line, type: (Make sure there are spaces between cd and the 2 dots)

cd ..

cd ..

cd Volumes

cd Patcher

cd files

Lets now run the script. Seems that the future of Windows development is happening largely for corporate environments and customers. I don’t take issue with this other than being someone who doesn’t live or work inside a corporate environment at home. Bunk. While it is niiiice that he has the privilege of being outside the corporate or enterprise box, the truth of it is that enterprise sales drive the cost of computing downwards. If not for both that fact and Bill Gates’ and Microsoft’s vision of computing for the masses, most of us would not be to afford software. Look to the costs of software as espoused by the IBMs and Oracles of this world. Now, thank Microsoft, for it wasn’t for them, you would not be able to afford software for your Mac.

2. Excellent power management in OS X. When I close the lid to my MacBook Pro, it falls asleep. When I open the lid to my MacBook Pro, it wakes up. Imagine that! Seems to be the case 99% of the time, and it happens quickly. Bunk. Anything less than that would be a shame, since apple delivers a complete hardware and software solution.

3. I’m ready to experience different frustrations. OS X isn’t perfect, certainly - but I already see its noticeably more stable than Windows Vista has been. Kernel Panics at least look prettier than BSODs. :) Seriously, I just find OS X’s update schedule to be more to my liking - instead of waiting for gigantic service packs, I get minor point releases along the way to major revisions to the OS. Bugs are going to happen, but knowing that showstopping / security bugs are likely to be squished quicker gives me amazing peace of mind. Bunk. What a nonsensical statement. Kernel Panics are better than BSODs? More stable? Dude, have you checked the number of fixes each OS X patchfest brings? Compared to Windows Vista? Or any version of Windows for that matter?

4. There’s more interesting, useful, beautiful, and affordable software being developed for OS X. If you still believe that there’s no software for “the Mac,” you’re simply a fool who hasn’t done his or her research. Bunk. Actually, Bro’, you are the fool for making such a simplistic statement

5. VMware Fusion makes it possible to have every operating system at my fingertips (as well as every app that runs on ‘em, FTW). Performance and stability is a reality, not a dream. More importantly, with USB 2.0 support in VMware Fusion, I have near complete compatibility with any external hardware. Parallels is also there, which should keep competition lively. Product plug!

6. I believe that the future of Windows (or any OS software layer) will be experienced in a virtual machine of some sort. People have been dual booting for years - now I can triple-task cross-platform in seconds flat. ??? Space filler

7. Not to say that Microsoft or Linux haven’t made great strides in recent years, but… at least Leopard feels like only one team was developing the UI. It’s not quite perfect, but closer to what perfect should be. I’m not a huge fan of iTunes or every other Apple utility - but at least with Leopard, they’re trying to make them look and work the same way. 1st semi-true point. The UI does look good. BFD! However, so is Aero ‘Glass’

8. I love the fact that most programs and their associated libraries are self-contained (apps). There’s no stress in installing / uninstalling most programs, and for true cleanup jobs there’s always AppZapper. 1st true point. For which I excoriate Microsoft daily. And cuss them the ‘F’ out whenever I run into it in client environments

9. I’m not a huge fan of the Dock for task management, but Quicksilver has virtually no Windows equivalent (in terms of elegance and scriptability, although it’s still completely overwhelming to me right now). The dock isn’t a shining example of where OS X is “better,” but I do appreciate the context menu options for each of the Dock’s icons for “Open at Login” management. Another space filler

10. Spotlight is to Windows Desktop Search as a BMW Z4 is to a Ford Pinto (in terms of performance, usability, and UI). No contest. I’m sure some would argue the opposite, but… they’re also probably the extreme developer “but it works if you just learn how to use it right” types. Feh. 2nd true point. Damn, Windows Search is a product that a) should be elegant in operation, b) should be simple in configurability, c) should be efficient, and d) return relevant and consistent results. It fails on all four points. As I have written before, the entire team should be publicly horsewhipped on the steps of the Island Club in Lagos

Download: Mac OS X86 10.5 Leopard

Leopard is the sixth major release of the Mac OS X operating system for Apple’s Mac line of personal computers, and is the successor to Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger". Leopard was released on October 26, 2007, and is available in two variants: a desktop version suitable for personal computers, and a server version, Mac OS X Server. Apple offers a reduced-cost upgrade to people that purchase new Apple computers between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007 that do not already have Mac OS X v10.5 pre-installed or a Leopard upgrade DVD included.

[1] According to Apple, Leopard contains over 300 changes and enhancements

[2] Covering core operating system components as well as included applications and developer tools. Leopard introduces a significantly revised desktop, with a redesigned Dock, Stacks, a semitransparent menu bar, and an updated Finder that incorporates the Cover Flow visual navigation interface first seen in iTunes. Other notable features include support for writing 64-bit graphical user interface applications, an automated backup utility called Time Machine, support for Spotlight searches across multiple machines, and the inclusion of Front Row and Photo Booth, which were previously only included with some Mac models.

This is the final retail version of Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard
To burn, open Disk Utility, drag .dmg file to the sidebar and press burn.

Click Here To Download [ 6.66 GB ]

Please comment if the link is not working.....

Note:
After downloading you have to do some work in order to run leopard successfully on your computer.

Click Here to Read the Tutorial

Update::    New Download Links

Update2::  Latest Download Links
